Seek to Understand Before Being Understood
We all have a desire to be heard, valued, and understood.
Yet, in our relationships, we sometimes become so focused on expressing our own thoughts, feelings, and experiences that we forget to truly listen to others.
When disagreements arise, it is natural to want to explain ourselves, defend our intentions, or prove our point. But in those moments, are we listening to understand, or simply waiting for our turn to speak?
What might change if we first sought to understand the other person?
Understanding does not mean agreeing with everything someone says. Nor does it mean compromising our values, ignoring our feelings, or abandoning healthy boundaries.
It means taking the time to recognize that another person's experiences, emotions, and perspectives matter, even when they differ from our own.
Sometimes, a simple question can make a meaningful difference:
“Can you help me understand what you're feeling?”
When we listen with genuine curiosity, patience, and compassion, we create opportunities for trust, respect, and connection.
We may not always agree. We may not always see things from the same perspective. But we can choose to approach one another with humility and a willingness to understand.
Perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person is not our advice, our answers, or even our agreement, but our willingness to truly listen.
